I'm digging this new track from the Black Keys that was produced by Danger Mouse (the grey album). It has a nice riff and great lyrics looking forward the hearing the rest of their new album "Brothers"
This time he is putting me up on some Detroit rap! This dude Chief from my hometown of Detroit. Its a great song and a dope video of the city! Check it out and show some love for your local music scene
The Royal Bangs draw comparisons to some of the most popular bands today: MGMT, Radiohead, Animal Collective and Passion Pit. There is more to them than meets the ear however. When the guys switch gears from electronic infused dance rock over to a standard drum set like on the songs “Brother” and “War Bells” some funky Tennessee flavor shines through.
Their latest album, Let it Beep was widely praised in United Kingdom publications. Here in the states they have been slow to catch on but some that took notice at Bonnaroo 2008 were impressed nonetheless.
The band’s guitarist Sam Stratton took a second to reflect on his career as a musician so far while taking a small break from touring to return home for the holidays.
Q: What has life as a musician been like compared to how you thought it would be?
A: “I recently got engaged, so all of this time on the road has been more taxing on my relationship than I expected. We’re usually on the road for about a month before we take time off. But I can’t really complain because I get to make music for a living. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
“I also didn’t really expect such a difference between touring in Europe and the United States. Over there, rock is still #1, so the whole climate and reaction to our music is different.”
Q: Any weird stories from being out on the road?
A: “ Back when we used to book our own shows just starting out, we played a show at some small time record store. The only person there was the single employee the store had. After we were playing for a while, he disappeared in the back and came out with this weird puppet and started dancing with it. So it was just us the band, and this kid dancing with a puppet that looked like a more obscene version of The Count from Sesame Street… it was creepy.”
Q: Wow. What was it like the first time you guys stopped in Detroit?
A: “We played at Corktown Tavern. All I remember is that they had plexi glass at the Little Caesars when we stopped to get a pizza. We had never seen that before. We just wondered what kind of heartless bastard would rob a Little Caesars? 5 dollar pizzas are a really good deal.”
Q: How did you end up on Patrick Carney’s (The Black Keys) label Audio Eagle Records?
A: He just kind of saw us around on one our tour stops on the area and checked out our Myspace. We were the first band he signed that wasn’t from Ohio.
Q: What’s in the future for Royal Bangs?
A: We’re going to finish the scheduled dates of our US tour, maybe play SXSW this year and then tour around Europe for a while before we drop our next album.
Q: How’s that coming? Have you started it?
A: “We’ve been working on some demos on our holiday break. Maybe two songs have been fleshed out but that’s it for now. We plan on recording the whole thing by ourselves like we did with the first album.”
Q: Is there any significance to the name Royal Bangs?
A: No, it just sounded cool. Back when the band first got together in high school, we were called Suburban Urchins for a while.
My boy T.I. is out of jail and ready to jump back in the game to reclaim is spot. I'm excited for his new album. Hopefully he took that year in jail to master his art and bring the fire on this new album. 8.24.10 is the expected release date for the album which is my boy Dave's birthday and A-team anniversary, so for me that is a good sign.... Here is the new single for you rap heads....enjoy!
-Strongmouth p.s. that is me with T.I. back in 2004
The other day i was driving to work and I said to myself "I wonder what happened to the Deftones?" This is truly a case of ask and you shall recieve people. I turned on the 89x which is hands down one of the best radio stations ever. If your not from Detroit you should listen to 89x online cause they play the best music and have the coolest on air personalities.
Back to the Deftones their first release on their new album "Diamond Eyes" is called Rocket Skates and I have it here for you today! New album comes out 5.18.10 If this first song is any indication on how good the new album will be then color me excited.
Whether , you know him as the Count, Voodoo Chili, Action Man, or his latest alias Herve. Joshua Harvey the man of many name really murders it on his essential mix from Febuary 21st of 2009 with radio one. With his many styles from dubstep, electro, ghetto to garage, Herve brings it from start to finish in this epic two mix enjoy.
I was at work today and my buddy Brian was telling me about a dj group that will be playing at DEMF this year. If you are a fan of electronic music, then you know it has a huge influence on my life. Savoy, who come from Boulder, CO, "the land of rich hippies" mix together some poppy hooks with bass pounding electro beats. I'm digging their stuff and I am interested in seeing them live. Check them out and let me know what you think. Below are a few of their new tracks and here is their myspace: www.myspace.com/savoyband
B.o.B is one of the new school rappers (class of 09-10). Coming from the ATL with a very soulful flow. He will be at Bonnaroo this year and I'm excited to see how he holds up live. Check out B.o.b ft Bruno Mars "Nothin' on You" below:" I also put a link to B.o.b- "Haterz" which is one of my faves.
Once again I enter into a random chat with someone at www.chatrt.com and end up talking about music. The guy I was talking created the beat to the andy milonakas rap at the end of the movie Waiting. He sent me a link to an electronic song by Yoshimoto and its got a pretty sweet beat. Check it out:
I'm not usually a fan of the Soulja Boy style rap, but I can't stop listening to this song. The hook is so catchy and I definately turn up the radio when it comes on.
Paper Tongues is one of those bands I want to say has a "style all there own" or that they "infuse many genres" but I sound so cliche' when I find myself wanting to write these things. So I'll keep it real as I should. The lead singers voice is what originally attracted me to the band, its perfectly raspy. I love the rock element with the lyrical rhyming style of Aswan North. These guys come from North Carolina and I really dig the style they are bringing to the Alt-rock scene. I look forward to hearing more from these guys. Check them out here: http://www.myspace.com/papertongues
Loving this mash up. Its La Roux "bulletproof" mixed over Britney Spears "Radar" = Haunting vocal with improved bass= can't get it out of my head. This track comes off of the Best of Bootie 2009 mash up cd. Enjoy.
So I was up late watching music videos on Mtv U and came across some good song/videos and I wanted to share them with everyone!
-Strongmouth
Never Shout Never- "What is Love? Loving the lyrics of this song.
Bjork- "Wanderlust" This video is pretty trippy when your up at 3 am!
Locksley- "Darling It's True" These guys played with my very first SS featured artist or at least part of My Friend Tom, Kenny Lee Young. They were awesome live and seeing this video last night brought back good memories.
Im starting off my 2010 blog with this video from Make the Girl Dance. My great friend Amin showed this to me last night and I almost lost a $50 dollar bet to him, but he took mercy on me for being poor lol. Thank you KO and check out his Photography skill @ KOPHOTOVOGUE.com !
So I stumbled upon this little gem while perusing the interwebs. This homeless guy named "Mustard" was on the opie and anthony show and they handed him a guitar and he gave us his version of a classic Radiohead song "Creep" check it out:
London's break out indie rock band of the year The XX might be a little too shy for the lime light. These 20 somethings from the UK had better get use to it if they keep making music this good. With emotionally driven lyrics that mingle with deep bass lines and perfectly pitchy guitar, The XX create a beautifully dark ambiance. It"s the kind of music you will listen to over and over. It is like being caught between two lovers who can see each other but can never touch again. Their amazing music has lead to some equally awesome remixes. Take a listen for yourself. I've posted some videos and tracks. Check them out and as always if you like it go buy it on itunes or in the store.
My boys Fake Money from the BK sent me a lil christmas song that they produced for their friends. If you're like me sometimes christmas can be stressful with all the shopping and present buying. This song put me in the Christmas mood faster then you could HO, HO, HO. Download this track and spread it around the internet....send it to all your friends that you're not going to buy anything for. It's the thought that count right!
Detroit's own Obie Trice is back with a brand new album "Special Reserve". This is his first album away from Shady/Interscope. The entire album is produced by MOSS. I love the way Obie flows and so far all of the tracks I have heard are hard. This album will definitely put Obie back on the map. The album drops Dec. 15th so go out and buy the album as a last minute christmas gift for that hip hop head in the family. Check out a few tracks from the new album right here:
The Armed in my opinion has to be THE best unsigned band in Detroit. My friend Grant made told me about The Armed and told me I should check them out. So I did. Everyone always talks up a local band that they know, most times I listen and soon become disappointed with the caliber of music I hear. The exact opposite happened when I went looking for The Armed. First they are giving their entire ablum away for free. You can go download it now here: http://www.thearmed.com/ . When it was finished downloading I listened to the album "These are Lights" and was blown away. Whether or not you're a fan of punk rock music, I believe anyone that is truly into music would take something away from this album. It is beautifully constructed with an in your face attitude that makes me want to punch someone in the face, but at the same time you can tell how classically trained these guys are on their instruments. The album is brilliant. Punk has never left, but this album could single handedly resurrect Detroit Punk.
I might be a little bias about Eminem being that I am from Detroit, but what this guy does with words puts him in a league all of his own. Instead of dropping the Relapse 2, Marshall pushed back a new album and gives us 7 new tracks to contemplate. I have four of the seven here for your listening pleasure. I listened and I loved. It's definitely the warm and fuzzy Em we have all grown to love as he still raps about murder, smoking weed and shoving wienersnitzel up Dr.Dre's ass. The Refill drops 12.21.09 go out and buy the album!
Hello fans of the blog and newbies! Sorry I have not posted in a few days. It is because of the holidays, I have been djin' alot recently and I also have not been inspired by any new music to share with you guys. Well I've finally found something of interest to me and sharing music again. Everything Everything is a band from Manchester, UK. Their name suits them well because the energetic genre allusive sound is like dance pop with twisted lyrics about everything and nothing at all. They dramatically change tempo and use the full sound of guitar, keyboard and vocal to paint a beautiful landscape of an alternate reality. It took me a few listens to truly grasp what these gents from across the Atlantic were trying to do. It's a fresh and innovative sound that I thought I would share with everyone everyone! enjoy
Just two dj's that love music
